The nature of socialism and the role of the state
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 2
Overview
Society the Manifesto expects to follow capitalism, what Marx and Engels meant by feudal socialism and petty-bourgeois socialism.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does the Manifesto's socialism differ from a programme of welfare reform?
Which later Marxist ideas are commonly but wrongly attributed to the Manifesto?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What role does the state play immediately after the revolution?
Model answer
Marx and Engels assign the state the task of concentrating the instruments of production in its hands while the proletariat holds political supremacy. The state is used as an instrument of transformation rather than abolished at once.
- 2
State what Marx and Engels expected to happen to the state once class distinctions had disappeared.
Model answer
Marx and Engels state that when class distinctions have disappeared and production is concentrated in the hands of a vast association of the whole nation, the public power will lose its political character. Political power properly so called is defined as merely the organised power of one class for oppressing another.
- 3
Why does the disappearance of classes imply the disappearance of political power?
Model answer
If the state exists to maintain the dominance of one class over another, then removing class division removes the state's function. Administration of things would remain where the government of persons had ended.
- 4
Describe the society the Manifesto expects to follow capitalism.
Model answer
Marx and Engels describe an association in which the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all. Individual freedom and collective organisation are presented as complementary rather than opposed.
- 5
Why is the Manifesto's account of communist society so brief?
Model answer
Marx and Engels were hostile to drawing up detailed blueprints, which they associated with the utopian socialists they criticised. The future society was to be worked out by those who made the revolution rather than prescribed in advance.
- 6
What is meant by describing capitalism as a necessary stage on the way to socialism?
Model answer
Marx and Engels argue that socialism requires the productive capacity, the concentrated workforce and the world market that only capitalism creates. Socialism is therefore possible only where capitalism has already developed.
