Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the claim that authoritarian rule is decisive?
Model answer
Defenders of authoritarian rule argue that a government free from elections, coalition bargaining and press criticism can decide quickly and carry decisions through. Supporters of Singapore's development under Lee Kuan Yew have made this argument in its strongest form.
- 2
Explain the argument that authoritarian governments can plan for the long term.
Model answer
Authoritarian governments are not facing re-election, so they can impose costs now for benefits that arrive decades later, such as infrastructure or industrial transformation. Critics reply that the absence of a deadline just as often produces drift and unchecked vanity projects.
- 3
What is meant by an authoritarian bargain?
Model answer
An authoritarian bargain is an implicit trade in which citizens accept restrictions on political rights in return for security, employment and rising living standards. The bargain fails the moment the material side of it stops being delivered.
- 4
Why is the absence of feedback a serious weakness of authoritarian systems?
Model answer
Without a free press, competitive elections or independent courts, rulers receive only the information their subordinates think it safe to give. Policy errors are therefore concealed and corrected late, if at all.
- 5
What did Amartya Sen argue about famine and political systems?
Model answer
Sen argued that no substantial famine has ever occurred in a functioning democracy with a free press and competitive elections. Sen's explanation is that publicity and the fear of removal force governments to act before starvation spreads.
- 6
Explain why succession is the characteristic crisis of authoritarian regimes.
Model answer
Authoritarian systems have no agreed, legitimate procedure for transferring power, so each succession is settled by manoeuvre or force. The resulting uncertainty invites coups, factional conflict and intervention by the security services.
