Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the conservative view of human nature?
Model answer
Conservatives regard human beings as imperfect: limited in reason, morally fallible, driven by appetite and self-interest, and dependent on the security of familiar surroundings. Politics must therefore be built for people as they are rather than as reformers wish them to be.
- 2
What is meant by psychological imperfection?
Model answer
Psychological imperfection is the conservative claim that individuals are dependent and insecure creatures who need the reassurance of custom, rootedness and belonging, and who become anxious and disorderly when those supports are removed.
- 3
What is meant by moral imperfection?
Model answer
Moral imperfection is the conservative claim that human beings are naturally selfish and capable of cruelty, so crime and disorder arise from human nature itself rather than from poverty or bad institutions, and require deterrence and authority.
- 4
What is meant by intellectual imperfection?
Model answer
Intellectual imperfection is the conservative claim that human understanding is limited and that the world is too complicated to be grasped by any individual mind, which is why conservatives prefer accumulated practice to rational design.
- 5
How does the conservative view of human nature justify a strong state on law and order?
Model answer
If wrongdoing arises from human nature rather than from circumstance, then improving conditions will not remove it, so conservatives conclude that firm policing, certain punishment and clear authority are permanently necessary.
- 6
How does the conservative view of human nature support tradition?
Model answer
Because conservatives doubt the power of individual reason, they hold that inherited custom carries the tested judgement of many generations and is therefore more reliable than the conclusions any one reformer can reach.
