Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define democracy.
Model answer
Democracy is a system in which political authority derives from the people and rulers are accountable to them. The word comes from the Greek for rule by the people.
- 2
Distinguish direct democracy from representative democracy.
Model answer
Direct democracy has citizens themselves taking political decisions, as in a referendum or a citizens' assembly. Representative democracy has citizens electing others to take decisions on their behalf and holding them to account at the next election.
- 3
What is liberal democracy?
Model answer
Liberal democracy combines popular election of the government with constitutional limits on what any government may do. Protected individual rights, the rule of law, an independent judiciary and a free press are its defining features.
- 4
How did Joseph Schumpeter define democracy?
Model answer
Schumpeter defined democracy as an institutional arrangement in which individuals acquire the power to decide by means of a competitive struggle for the people's vote. The definition deliberately reduces democracy to a method for choosing rulers rather than a form of popular rule.
- 5
What did Robert Dahl mean by polyarchy?
Model answer
Dahl used polyarchy to describe real-world systems that approach the democratic ideal without reaching it, measured by how far they allow contestation and how widely they include citizens. Free elections, freedom of expression, alternative sources of information and freedom of association are among its requirements.
- 6
Distinguish majoritarian democracy from consensus democracy.
Model answer
Majoritarian democracy concentrates power in a single-party government commanding a legislative majority, as in the Westminster model. Consensus democracy disperses power through coalition, proportional representation and constitutional checks, which Lijphart argued suits divided societies far better.
