Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is the Pledge of Office?

    Model answer

The Pledge of Office is the undertaking every minister must give before taking up office, set out in statute, binding them to a list of commitments about how they will govern.

  2. 2

Name four commitments contained in the Pledge of Office.

    Model answer

Ministers pledge to discharge their duties in good faith, to commit themselves to non-violence and exclusively peaceful and democratic means, to serve all the people of Northern Ireland equally, and to support and act in accordance with all decisions of the Executive Committee and the Assembly.

  3. 3

What commitment was added to the Pledge of Office after St Andrews?

    Model answer

Ministers were required to uphold the rule of law, including support for policing and the courts. That addition was central to securing unionist confidence in Sinn Féin holding office.

  4. 4

What was added to the Pledge of Office by A Fresh Start in 2015?

    Model answer

Ministers were required to work collectively to achieve the disbandment of paramilitary organisations and to challenge paramilitary activity and associated criminality.

  5. 5

    What is the Ministerial Code?

    Model answer

The Ministerial Code is the statutory code governing how ministers conduct themselves and how business is brought to the Executive Committee.

  6. 6

When did the Ministerial Code become statutory, and why does that matter?

    Model answer

The Ministerial Code was placed on a statutory footing by the legislation implementing the St Andrews Agreement in 2006, which means a breach can be challenged in the courts rather than being a matter of political judgement alone.
