Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the format of Prime Minister's Questions.
Model answer
Prime Minister's Questions is held for half an hour each Wednesday the House sits, and the Leader of the Opposition is allotted six questions while the leader of the next largest party has two.
- 2
How does departmental question time work?
Model answer
Each government department answers oral questions on a rota, so that ministers face the House roughly once a month with topical questions allowed at the end.
- 3
What is an urgent question, and who decides whether one is granted?
Model answer
An urgent question compels a minister to come to the chamber the same day to answer on a pressing matter. The Speaker alone decides whether to grant one, and their use expanded markedly after 2009.
- 4
Why is the power to grant urgent questions significant for scrutiny?
Model answer
The power to grant urgent questions lies with the Speaker rather than the government, so ministers can be dragged to the despatch box on a day and a subject they did not choose.
- 5
What is a ministerial statement?
Model answer
A ministerial statement is an announcement made to the House by a minister, followed by questions from members, and it is used for major policy changes and emergencies.
- 6
Give one advantage of a written parliamentary question over an oral one.
Model answer
A written question can demand detailed factual information, such as figures a department would not volunteer, and it puts the answer on the record without the pressure of chamber time.
