  1. 1

    What is socialism?

    Model answer

Socialism is a political ideology that treats human beings as social creatures shaped by their conditions, condemns the inequality produced by private ownership of the means of production, and seeks a society organised on co-operation, common ownership and substantial equality.

  2. 2

Which historical developments gave rise to socialism?

    Model answer

Socialism arose from industrialisation in the nineteenth century, as factory production created a large urban working class living in poverty and insecurity, and as those workers organised in unions and political parties to change the conditions they worked under.

  3. 3

What is meant by the socialist principle of community?

    Model answer

Community is the socialist claim that human beings are bound together by a common humanity and are best understood as members of a society rather than as separate individuals, so that what one person suffers is a concern of all.

  4. 4

What do socialists mean by co-operation?

    Model answer

Co-operation is the socialist claim that people achieve more by working together than by competing, and that co-operative arrangements draw out generosity and solidarity, whereas competition rewards selfishness and wastes effort in rivalry.

  5. 5

What is meant by social class in socialist analysis?

    Model answer

Class in socialist analysis is a group defined by its relationship to the means of production or to wealth and occupation, and socialists treat class rather than nation or religion as the fundamental division in an industrial society.

  6. 6

Why do socialists emphasise the working class?

    Model answer

Socialists argue that the working class produces the wealth of society while receiving the smallest share of it, and that because its members share an interest in ending that arrangement it is the collective agent capable of bringing socialism about.
