Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is one-nation conservatism?
Model answer
One-nation conservatism is the paternalist strand of the ideology which holds that the wealthy owe duties to the poor, that great inequality endangers social unity, and that the state should act to improve conditions in order to keep the nation whole.
- 2
Where does the phrase one nation come from?
Model answer
The phrase derives from Benjamin Disraeli's novel Sybil, published in 1845 and subtitled The Two Nations, which described the rich and the poor as two nations between whom there was no intercourse and no sympathy.
- 3
What did Disraeli argue about the condition of the people?
Model answer
Disraeli argued that a country divided into two nations could not endure, and that the Conservative Party should attach the working class to the existing order by improving housing, health and working conditions rather than leaving them to the market.
- 4
Which reforms did Disraeli's government of 1874 to 1880 carry?
Model answer
That government passed measures on public health, artisans' dwellings, the sale of food and drugs, factory hours and the legal position of trade unions, which are cited as practical one-nation conservatism.
- 5
How does one-nation conservatism justify state intervention?
Model answer
One-nation conservatives justify intervention by duty and by prudence: those with wealth owe care to those without, and a society in which the poor believe they have no stake will not remain stable.
- 6
What is the one-nation view of the welfare state?
Model answer
One-nation conservatives accept a welfare state as a means of binding the nation together and preventing destitution, while arguing that it should support the family and encourage work rather than replace personal responsibility.
