Which three spheres of liberty does Mill identify as the appropriate region of human freedom?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
When was On Liberty published, and to whom is it dedicated?
Model answer
On Liberty was published in 1859. Mill dedicated the book to the memory of his wife Harriet Taylor, whom he credited as its inspirer and in part its author.
- 2
What does Mill say is the subject of the essay in his opening sentence?
Model answer
Mill states that the subject is civil or social liberty, meaning the nature and limits of the power that society may legitimately exercise over the individual. Mill deliberately sets aside the older question of free will.
- 3
Why did Mill think the question of liberty had changed its character in his own age?
Model answer
Mill argued that the old struggle had been between subjects and rulers whose interests were opposed, and had been fought by winning constitutional checks. Once rulers became the elected agents of the people, the danger shifted to the power of society itself over the individual.
- 4
State Mill's one very simple principle.
Model answer
Mill holds that the only purpose for which power can rightfully be exercised over any member of a civilised community against his will is to prevent harm to others. A person's own good, physical or moral, is never a sufficient warrant.
- 5
How does Mill describe the individual's sovereignty over himself?
Model answer
Mill writes that over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign. Each person is the proper guardian of his own health and interests.
- 6
Name the five chapters of On Liberty in order.
Model answer
The chapters are the Introductory chapter, Of the Liberty of Thought and Discussion, Of Individuality as One of the Elements of Well-Being, Of the Limits to the Authority of Society over the Individual, and Applications.
