Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is revolutionary socialism?
Model answer
Revolutionary socialism is the position that capitalism cannot be reformed away because the owning class controls the state, so socialism requires the overthrow of existing political and economic institutions and their replacement by workers' power.
- 2
Why do revolutionary socialists reject the parliamentary route?
Model answer
Revolutionary socialists argue that parliaments operate within a state built to protect property, that owners control the press and the economy, and that any elected socialist government would be obstructed or removed, as they claim events have repeatedly shown.
- 3
What is historical materialism?
Model answer
Historical materialism is the theory advanced by Marx that the way a society produces its material life shapes its law, politics and ideas, and that history advances through conflict between classes as productive forces outgrow existing property relations.
- 4
What did Marx and Engels argue about class struggle?
Model answer
They argued in 1848 that the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles, and that industrial society had simplified the conflict into two great classes, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat.
- 5
What is the bourgeoisie?
Model answer
The bourgeoisie in Marxist analysis is the class that owns the means of production and lives from the profit made by employing others, and which in Marx's account also controls the state, the law and the dominant ideas of the age.
- 6
What is the proletariat?
Model answer
The proletariat is the class that owns no productive property and lives by selling its labour power. Marx argued that its shared conditions would give it class consciousness and make it the agent of revolutionary change.
