Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are members of Dáil Éireann called?
Model answer
Members of Dáil Éireann are called Teachtaí Dála, usually shortened to TDs.
- 2
How many TDs were returned at the 2024 general election?
Model answer
The 2024 general election returned 174 TDs, up from 160 at the 2020 election, after constituencies were revised to reflect population growth.
- 3
Why does the number of TDs change from one general election to another?
Model answer
The Constitution requires between one TD per 20,000 and one TD per 30,000 of population, so the total has to be revised as the population rises.
- 4
What is the smallest number of seats a Dáil constituency may return?
Model answer
No constituency may return fewer than three members, and legislation in practice caps constituencies at five seats.
- 5
Who recommends where Dáil constituency boundaries fall?
Model answer
An Coimisiún Toghcháin, the independent Electoral Commission established in 2023, recommends the boundaries, and the Oireachtas then legislates for them. Independent review was introduced to stop governments drawing boundaries to suit themselves.
- 6
How long may a Dáil sit before a general election must be held?
Model answer
A Dáil may sit for a maximum of five years from its first meeting, a limit set by statute inside the Constitution's outer limit of seven years.
