Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the Marxist theory of the origin of political power.
Model answer
Marxism locates the origin of political power in the ownership of the means of production. The class that owns the productive resources of a society controls its politics, because economic dominance translates into political dominance.
- 2
What is meant by the ruling class?
Model answer
The ruling class is the class that owns the means of production and, through that ownership, dominates the state and the prevailing ideas of a society. In capitalist society the ruling class is the bourgeoisie.
- 3
Explain the relationship between base and superstructure.
Model answer
Marx argued that the economic base of production relations conditions the legal, political and ideological superstructure built upon it. Political institutions and ideas therefore reflect and reproduce the interests of the class that dominates the economy.
- 4
How did Marx and Engels describe the modern state in The Communist Manifesto?
Model answer
Marx and Engels described the executive of the modern state as a committee for managing the common affairs of the whole bourgeoisie. The state on this account is an instrument of the owning class rather than a neutral arbiter.
- 5
What did Marx and Engels mean by saying that the ruling ideas of every age are the ideas of its ruling class?
Model answer
Marx and Engels argued in The German Ideology that the class controlling material production also controls the production of ideas. The beliefs that appear as common sense therefore serve the interests of the dominant class.
- 6
Define false consciousness.
Model answer
False consciousness is a subordinate class's acceptance of beliefs that misrepresent its own situation and interests. Marxists use the concept to explain why exploited groups often support the arrangements that exploit them.
