What are priority questions?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does scrutiny mean in the work of the Oireachtas?
Model answer
Scrutiny is the examination of the Government's policies, spending and administration, so that ministers must explain and defend what their departments do.
- 2
What is a parliamentary question?
Model answer
A parliamentary question is a formal question tabled by a TD to a minister about the work of that minister's department, answered either orally in the Dáil chamber or in writing.
- 3
What are priority questions?
Model answer
Priority questions are a small number of oral questions reserved at each question time for opposition spokespersons, so the main opposition parties are guaranteed a chance to press the minister directly.
- 4
What are Leaders' Questions?
Model answer
Leaders' Questions is a slot in which the leaders of the opposition parties question the Taoiseach directly on matters of the day. The exchange is short, high-profile and heavily covered in the media.
- 5
What is the Topical Issues debate for?
Model answer
Topical Issues allows backbench TDs to raise urgent local or current matters and receive a reply from a minister or minister of state. Ministers frequently send a colleague to read a departmental reply, which weakens the exercise.
- 6
Distinguish a select committee from a joint committee of the Oireachtas.
Model answer
A select committee is drawn from one House alone and takes the committee stage of bills for that House. A joint committee brings together the select committees of both Houses to examine policy and question ministers and officials.
