Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a cabinet committee?

    Model answer

A cabinet committee is a smaller group of ministers appointed to take decisions in a defined policy area, and its conclusions carry the same authority as a decision of the full Cabinet.

  2. 2

    Why are cabinet committees necessary?

    Model answer

Government handles far more business than a weekly meeting of twenty ministers could consider, so most collective decisions are delegated to committees of the ministers directly concerned.

  3. 3

Who decides the membership and chairs of cabinet committees?

    Model answer

The Prime Minister decides which committees exist, who sits on them and who chairs them, and takes the chair of the most important committees personally.

  4. 4

What is the National Security Council?

    Model answer

The National Security Council is the cabinet committee that coordinates defence, foreign policy, security and intelligence, chaired by the Prime Minister and attended by the relevant ministers and the heads of the intelligence agencies. The Council was established in 2010.

  5. 5

What does the Cabinet Office do?

    Model answer

The Cabinet Office supports the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, servicing Cabinet and its committees, coordinating policy across departments and managing the civil service.

  6. 6

What is the Prime Minister's Office at 10 Downing Street?

    Model answer

The Prime Minister's Office is the staff of civil servants and political appointees who serve the Prime Minister directly, covering policy advice, communications, parliamentary relations and the diary.
