Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is symbolic interactionism?
Model answer
Symbolic interactionism studies how people build shared meanings through the symbols they exchange, above all language. Blumer set out its principles in 1969.
- 2
State Blumer's three premises of symbolic interactionism.
Model answer
Blumer argued that people act towards things on the basis of their meanings, and that those meanings arise in interaction. Meanings are then modified through interpretation.
- 3
What does Mead's account of the self contribute to method?
Model answer
Mead argued that the self develops by taking the role of the other. Research must therefore recover how a person sees themselves through others' eyes.
- 4
How did Becker's (1963) work on labelling use interactionist method?
Model answer
Becker studied marijuana users and dance musicians through observation and interviews. Deviance emerged from the reaction of others rather than from the act itself.
- 5
What is Goffman's dramaturgical approach?
Model answer
Goffman analysed interaction as performance, with a front region and a back region. Goffman's account of 1959 treats social life as the management of impressions.
- 6
Why does the idea of a front region complicate research?
Model answer
Participants perform for a researcher as they would for any other audience. Reaching the back region requires long presence and established trust.
