  1. 1

How does the medical model define disability?

    Model answer

The medical model locates disability in the individual body as a defect to be corrected. Treatment, rehabilitation and cure are its characteristic responses.

  2. 2

How does the social model define disability?

    Model answer

The social model defines disability as the disadvantage imposed by a society built around non-disabled people. Barriers rather than bodies are treated as the problem.

  3. 3

Who is most associated with naming the social model of disability?

    Model answer

Michael Oliver, a disabled British academic, named the social model in the early 1980s. Oliver set out the argument fully in The Politics of Disablement (1990, UK).

  4. 4

Which organisation first separated impairment from disability?

    Model answer

The Union of the Physically Impaired Against Segregation drew the distinction in Britain in 1976. Impairment was the bodily condition and disability the exclusion imposed on top of it.

  5. 5

Distinguish impairment from disability in the social model.

    Model answer

Impairment is a loss or difference of bodily or mental function. Disability is the exclusion produced when society fails to accommodate that difference.

  6. 6

Give an example of a disabling barrier.

    Model answer

A building reachable only by a flight of steps excludes a wheelchair user. Social model writers locate the disability in the steps rather than in the person.
