Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is social identity?
Model answer
Social identity is the part of the self drawn from membership of social groups. Class, gender, ethnicity, religion and nation all supply social identities.
- 2
What is a collective identity?
Model answer
Collective identity is a shared sense of belonging among the members of a group. Supporters of a football club and members of a congregation share one.
- 3
What did Richard Jenkins argue about identity?
Model answer
Jenkins argued in 1996 that identity is a constant exchange between how we define ourselves and how others categorise us. Neither side alone produces identity.
- 4
What is meant by an in-group and an out-group?
Model answer
An in-group is the group a person belongs to and identifies with. An out-group is defined as different and is often judged less favourably.
- 5
Why does identity involve both similarity and difference?
Model answer
An identity claim states what a person shares with one group and how they differ from others. Boundaries matter as much as belonging.
- 6
What is meant by multiple identities?
Model answer
A person holds several identities at once, such as parent, worker, Muslim and Welsh. Which one matters most depends on the situation.
