The right to withdraw and protection from harm
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Right to withdraw and vicarious trauma.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why must the right to withdraw be stated at the start?
Does the right to withdraw extend to data already given?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the right to withdraw?
Model answer
The right to withdraw allows a participant to stop taking part at any point without giving a reason. The participant may suffer no penalty of any kind for stopping.
- 2
Why must the right to withdraw be stated at the start?
Model answer
A participant who does not know they may stop will feel obliged to continue. The right is meaningless unless it is known.
- 3
Does the right to withdraw extend to data already given?
Model answer
Participants are normally allowed to withdraw their data as well as themselves. A cut-off is usually set at the point of analysis or publication.
- 4
Why is withdrawal difficult in a group setting?
Model answer
A participant who leaves a discussion cannot unsay what has already passed. Their earlier contributions remain part of the group's exchange.
- 5
Why can withdrawal be hard for a participant in a long ethnography?
Model answer
An ethnographer becomes a familiar presence and something close to a friend. A request to leave then feels like ending a relationship rather than exercising a right.
- 6
What does protection from harm cover?
Model answer
Protection from harm covers physical injury, psychological distress, embarrassment, legal jeopardy and damage to reputation. Harm following publication counts as well as harm during the study.
