Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is neo-Weberianism?
Model answer
Neo-Weberianism is later work extending Weber's framework of market situation, status and closure to contemporary structures of class, ethnicity and profession, generally retaining his pluralism about the sources of inequality.
- 2
What did Goldthorpe contribute to class analysis?
Model answer
Goldthorpe developed a class schema based on employment relations — whether a person is an employer, self-employed or an employee, and whether their employment rests on a labour contract or a service relationship — which underlies the National Statistics classification.
- 3
What is the difference between a labour contract and a service relationship?
Model answer
A labour contract exchanges effort for wages, with close supervision and little security. A service relationship exchanges commitment for a salary, career progression, autonomy and prospective rewards such as a pension, and characterises professional and managerial employment.
- 4
What did Rex and Tomlinson argue about ethnicity and class?
Model answer
Rex and Tomlinson argued in 1979, from research in Birmingham, that minority ethnic groups occupied a distinct and weaker position. That position held across the labour, housing and education markets. The groups formed an underclass separate from the white working class.
- 5
What criticisms are made of the Rex and Tomlinson underclass thesis?
Model answer
Critics argue that the thesis separates minority workers from a working class they are part of. Outcomes vary widely between and within ethnic groups. The term underclass also carries pejorative associations from quite different New Right usage.
- 6
What is the dual labour market theory?
Model answer
Barron and Norris argued in 1976 that the labour market divides in two. A primary sector offers secure, well-paid work with career progression. A secondary sector offers insecure, low-paid work, and movement between the two is limited.
