- 3 things to know
- Component 3 Section B

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What policies follow from dependency theory?
What is world systems theory?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is dependency theory?
Model answer
Dependency theory holds that the poverty of poorer countries is produced by their relationship with richer ones, through which resources flow outward, so underdevelopment is an active process rather than an original condition.
- 2
What did Andre Gunder Frank argue?
Model answer
Frank argued in 1967 that development and underdevelopment are two sides of one process. Wealth flows from satellites to metropolises through a chain reaching from the village to the world centre, so the same relationship that develops one end underdevelops the other.
- 3
What is meant by the development of underdevelopment?
Model answer
The development of underdevelopment is Frank's phrase for an active process. Poorer regions were not simply left behind but were made poor by their incorporation into the world economy on unfavourable terms. Their condition is a product of contact rather than of isolation.
- 4
What is the metropolis-satellite relationship?
Model answer
The metropolis-satellite relationship is the chain through which surplus is extracted: each satellite is a metropolis to those below it, so wealth is drawn from the rural periphery through provincial and national centres to the global centre.
- 5
What historical mechanisms do dependency theorists identify?
Model answer
Dependency theorists identify slavery and the colonial extraction of minerals and cash crops. Local manufacturing was destroyed and trade was imposed on colonial terms. After independence the same relationship continued through debt, aid conditions and transnational corporations.
- 6
What is neo-colonialism?
Model answer
Neo-colonialism is the argument that formal independence left the economic relationship intact, so control is exercised through investment, debt, trade terms and political influence rather than through direct rule.
