Artefact and self-selection explanations
- 3 things to know
- Component 3 Section B
Overview
Health-related social mobility, downward drift and numerator-denominator problem.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which report set out the artefact explanation?
Give two measurement problems the artefact explanation points to.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the artefact explanation of health inequality claim?
Model answer
The artefact explanation claims that the class gradient is largely a product of how the figures are made. Measurement problems rather than real differences are said to produce the gap.
- 2
Which report set out the artefact explanation?
Model answer
The Black Report (1980, UK) listed artefact as one of its four possible explanations. The report examined it and judged it insufficient.
- 3
Give two measurement problems the artefact explanation points to.
Model answer
Occupational class on a death certificate may not match the class recorded at the census. The size and composition of the unskilled group have also changed over time.
- 4
Why does a shrinking unskilled class matter to the artefact argument?
Model answer
As the unskilled group shrinks it becomes an unrepresentative residue of the least healthy. Comparing the top and bottom classes then exaggerates the gap.
- 5
How have researchers tested the artefact explanation?
Model answer
Researchers have repeated the analysis using income, education and housing tenure instead of occupation. The gradient persists whichever measure of social position is used.
- 6
Why is the artefact explanation largely rejected today?
Model answer
The gradient appears in longitudinal studies that avoid inconsistent record-keeping altogether. Whitehall II, following the same civil servants over years, showed it clearly.
