  1. 1

What is the functionalist explanation of gender roles?

    Model answer

Parsons argued in 1955 that the nuclear family works best with a division between an instrumental role, performed by the husband as breadwinner, and an expressive role, performed by the wife in caring for the household, and that this division is functional for the family and for society.

  2. 2

What criticisms are made of the functionalist account of gender roles?

    Model answer

Feminists argue it describes a historically specific arrangement as though it were universal, ignores the power difference between the two roles, and offers no explanation of why the expressive role should fall to women other than that it does.

  3. 3

What is human capital theory, and how does it explain the pay gap?

    Model answer

Human capital theory holds that earnings reflect investment in education, training and continuous experience. Applied to gender, it attributes the pay gap to women's interrupted employment and shorter hours reducing accumulated human capital.

  4. 4

What is the criticism of a human capital explanation of the pay gap?

    Model answer

Women now exceed men in educational attainment, and a gap persists after qualifications and experience are held constant. The theory also treats the interruption as a free choice, when it reflects the unequal distribution of caring responsibility.

  5. 5

    What is Hakim's preference theory?

    Model answer

Hakim argued from 1995 that in societies where contraception, equal opportunity law and flexible work are available, women's employment patterns largely reflect genuine and differing preferences: a minority are work-centred, a minority home-centred and the majority adaptive.

  6. 6

What criticisms are made of preference theory?

    Model answer

Critics argue that preferences form under constraint — the cost of childcare, the availability of part-time work, and what employers offer — so what is measured as a preference may be an adaptation to limited options.
