Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is secondary socialisation?
Model answer
Secondary socialisation is the learning of culture beyond the family through institutions such as school, religion, media and work. Wider and more impersonal rules are learned at this stage.
- 2
How does secondary socialisation differ from the primary stage?
Model answer
The primary stage takes place in intimate family settings during early childhood. Later socialisation happens in large institutions and continues throughout life.
- 3
What did Parsons mean by particularistic and universalistic standards?
Model answer
Parsons argued in 1961 that families judge children by particularistic standards applying to them alone. Schools apply universalistic standards that are the same for everyone.
- 4
Why did Parsons describe school as a bridge?
Model answer
Parsons argued that school bridges the family and wider society. Children move from a position given by birth to one earned by performance.
- 5
What is anticipatory socialisation?
Model answer
Anticipatory socialisation is learning the expectations of a role before entering it. Robert Merton used the term in 1949 for adopting the outlook of a group one hopes to join.
- 6
Give an example of anticipatory socialisation.
Model answer
A medical student adopts professional dress and manner before qualifying. Rehearsing the part eases the eventual transition into it.
