Sensitivity and researching difficult subjects

  • 3 things to know
  • Component 2

Why do researchers favour unstructured interviews on sensitive subjects?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What makes a research topic sensitive?

    Model answer

A topic is sensitive where discussing it threatens the participant with distress, stigma, or legal and social consequences. Bereavement, abuse, addiction and immigration status are examples.

  2. 2

Why is a questionnaire usually a poor instrument on a sensitive topic?

    Model answer

A questionnaire offers no trust and no way of responding to distress. Respondents either refuse outright or give guarded answers.

  3. 3

Why do researchers favour unstructured interviews on sensitive subjects?

    Model answer

An unstructured interview allows the respondent to set the pace. Trust can be built before the difficult material is approached.

  4. 4

How did Dobash and Dobash (1979) handle a sensitive topic?

    Model answer

Dobash and Dobash interviewed women at length and in private within Scottish refuges. The setting gave the women safety and control over what they disclosed.

  5. 5

Why can matching interviewer to respondent matter on a sensitive topic?

    Model answer

Respondents often talk more openly to somebody of the same sex, age or ethnic background. Shared experience reduces the fear of being judged.

  6. 6

Give one reason sensitive research often produces low response rates.

    Model answer

People decline to discuss experiences they find shaming or dangerous to reveal. Those who do agree may be unusual in their willingness.
