Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are official statistics?
Model answer
Official statistics are numerical data collected and published by government and its agencies. Crime, health, education, employment and population figures are the main kinds.
- 2
Distinguish registration data from survey data within official statistics.
Model answer
Registration data come from legally required records such as births, deaths and marriages. Survey data come from government surveys of a sample of the population.
- 3
What is the census, and how often is it taken?
Model answer
The census is a count of the whole population and its households, taken every ten years. The first was in 1801 and the most recent in England and Wales was in 2021.
- 4
Why does the census achieve a response rate no survey can match?
Model answer
Completing the census is a legal requirement and refusal carries a fine. The 2021 census in England and Wales achieved a response of about 97%.
- 5
Give two reasons positivists value official statistics.
Model answer
Official statistics cover whole populations and are gathered on the same basis year after year. Positivists argue that trends and correlations can be established from them.
- 6
Distinguish hard from soft official statistics.
Model answer
Hard statistics such as births and deaths are recorded consistently and are difficult to dispute. Soft statistics such as recorded crime depend on decisions about what to write down.
