  1. 1

What is the common ground between feminist theories of inequality?

    Model answer

All feminist theories hold that women are systematically disadvantaged relative to men. That disadvantage is socially produced rather than natural, and mainstream sociology long neglected it. Feminist theories differ over its cause and its remedy.

  2. 2

    What do liberal feminists argue?

    Model answer

Liberal feminists attribute inequality to prejudice, discrimination and gender-role socialisation, and argue it can be removed through legal reform, equal opportunity policy and changed attitudes, without transforming the wider economic system.

  3. 3

What evidence supports the liberal feminist position?

    Model answer

The narrowing of the gender pay gap, the reversal of the gender gap in educational attainment, and the entry of women into professions previously closed to them all followed legal and policy change, which supports the claim that reform works.

  4. 4

What criticisms are made of liberal feminism?

    Model answer

Radical and Marxist feminists argue that liberal feminism treats symptoms rather than causes. Decades of equality legislation have left substantial inequality intact. Liberal feminism also accepts the structure of paid work rather than questioning who does unpaid work.

  5. 5

    What do Marxist feminists argue?

    Model answer

Marxist feminists argue that women's subordination serves capitalism: unpaid domestic labour reproduces the workforce at no cost to employers, and women form a flexible reserve of cheap labour drawn in and released as demand requires.

  6. 6

What is the domestic labour debate?

    Model answer

The domestic labour debate was an argument among Marxist feminists in the 1970s. At issue was whether housework produces surplus value directly or contributes indirectly by reproducing labour power. Benston and others held that its unpaid character is what benefits capital.
