Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a personal document?
Model answer
A personal document is a private record made by an individual, such as a letter, a diary or a photograph album. The writer never intended a researcher to read it.
- 2
What is a public document?
Model answer
A public document is produced by an organisation and generally available, such as minutes, reports and inspection records. Publication was intended from the outset.
- 3
Give two reasons interpretivists value personal documents.
Model answer
Personal documents record events in the writer's own words and at the time. Interpretivists argue that meaning and motive are visible with no researcher present to distort them.
- 4
Name the four criteria Scott (1990) set out for assessing a document.
Model answer
Scott proposed authenticity, credibility, representativeness and meaning. Each has to be tested before a document is used as evidence.
- 5
What does authenticity mean in Scott's scheme?
Model answer
Authenticity asks whether a document is genuine and of undisputed origin. Forgeries, damaged copies and ghostwritten material all fail the test.
- 6
What does credibility mean in Scott's scheme?
Model answer
Credibility asks whether the document is a sincere and accurate account. A diary written with an eye to publication is less credible.
