Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is social class?
Model answer
Social class is a grouping of people sharing a similar economic position, and in most sociological usage a similar relationship to work, income and property. Different theorists define it by ownership, by market position or by occupation.
- 2
What was the Registrar General's classification?
Model answer
The Registrar General's social class scheme grouped occupations into five classes. The scale ran from professional at the top to unskilled manual at the bottom. The scheme was used in official statistics in Britain for most of the twentieth century, until its replacement in 2001.
- 3
Why was the Registrar General's scheme criticised?
Model answer
It ranked occupations by perceived social standing rather than by any stated principle, it classified married women by their husband's occupation, and it had no place for people outside paid work, so large groups were invisible in the figures.
- 4
What replaced it, and on what basis?
Model answer
The National Statistics Socio-economic Classification, introduced for the 2001 census, groups occupations by employment relations and conditions — whether a person is an employer, is self-employed, or is an employee, and how much security, autonomy and career progression the job carries.
- 5
How many classes does the National Statistics Socio-economic Classification use?
Model answer
The full version has eight classes, running from higher managerial, administrative and professional occupations in class 1 to routine occupations in class 7, with class 8 for those who have never worked and the long-term unemployed.
- 6
Give one strength and one weakness of classifying by occupation.
Model answer
Occupation is recorded consistently and correlates strongly with income, health and education, so it is a practical and revealing measure. Against that, it says nothing about inherited wealth, it places retired and unpaid workers awkwardly, and two people in the same occupation may live very differently.
