Social Inequality: Evidence and Patterns
Ethnic inequality in health, education and criminal justice
- 3 things to know
- Component 3 Section A
Overview
Ethnocentric curriculum, disproportionality in the criminal justice system and criminalisation of a group.

Answer each one before you reveal it.
How might processes inside schools contribute to ethnic differences in attainment?
What is meant by an ethnocentric curriculum?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What patterns exist in educational attainment by ethnicity?
Model answer
Attainment differs markedly between groups and does not follow a simple hierarchy of advantage. Some minority ethnic groups outperform the White British average at sixteen while others fall below it, and within every group class and gender differences remain large.
- 2
Why is class a complication in reading ethnic differences in attainment?
Model answer
Ethnic groups differ in their class composition, so part of what appears as an ethnic difference is a class difference. Analyses that hold class constant find the ethnic gaps change substantially, and for some groups reverse.
- 3
How might processes inside schools contribute to ethnic differences in attainment?
Model answer
Research has pointed to teacher expectations and labelling, and to the placing of pupils in lower sets. The ethnocentric character of some curriculum content is a further factor. Differences in exclusion rates complete the picture, and all of these locate part of the difference inside the school.
- 4
What is meant by an ethnocentric curriculum?
Model answer
An ethnocentric curriculum is one that presents the history, literature and values of one culture as universal, so pupils from other backgrounds encounter little that reflects their own. Critics argue it affects both attainment and identity.
- 5
What patterns exist in health by ethnicity?
Model answer
Research has found higher rates of some conditions in particular groups — for example cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes in some South Asian populations — alongside evidence of poorer experiences of care and of under-diagnosis and over-diagnosis in mental health services for some groups.
- 6
What explanations are offered for ethnic differences in health?
Model answer
Explanations include material factors, since minority groups are over-represented in deprived areas and low-paid work; cultural and genetic factors, which are contested; barriers to accessing services including language and trust; and the effect of experiencing racism itself as a chronic stressor.
