Sampling, Ethics and Practical Issues
Simple random and systematic random sampling
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Simple random sample and systematic random sample.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is a simple random sample actually drawn?
Why is simple random sampling free of researcher bias?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a simple random sample?
Model answer
A simple random sample gives every member of the sampling frame an equal chance of selection. Names are drawn by lot or by random numbers.
- 2
How is a simple random sample actually drawn?
Model answer
Every entry in the frame is numbered and random numbers are generated until the required count is reached. Repeats are discarded and the next number taken.
- 3
Why is simple random sampling free of researcher bias?
Model answer
Chance alone decides who is included, so nobody exercises a preference. The researcher's expectations cannot enter the sample.
- 4
Give two practical difficulties with simple random sampling.
Model answer
Simple random sampling needs a complete and accurate frame for the whole population. The people selected may also be scattered nationally, making interviews expensive.
- 5
Why can a simple random sample still turn out unrepresentative?
Model answer
Chance can produce a draw that happens to over-represent one group. A random selection of fifty people may contain forty women.
- 6
What is a systematic random sample?
Model answer
A systematic random sample takes every nth entry from the frame after a random starting point. Every twentieth name might be selected.
