Who established long fieldwork as the ethnographic standard?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is ethnography?
Model answer
Ethnography is the detailed study of a group's way of life from within, usually over months or years. Observation, conversation and documents are combined.
- 2
How does ethnography differ from a single period of observation?
Model answer
Ethnography aims at a rounded account of a whole culture rather than an answer to one question. Immersion is long and the researcher follows the group into every setting.
- 3
Who established long fieldwork as the ethnographic standard?
Model answer
Malinowski established prolonged residence with a people as the standard for fieldwork. Malinowski published his Trobriand Islands study in 1922.
- 4
What is thick description?
Model answer
Thick description records not only what people did but the meanings and context that make the action intelligible. A wink is thereby distinguished from a twitch.
- 5
Why is ethnography said to have high validity?
Model answer
Ethnography follows people over a long period in their own surroundings. Performances for the researcher break down and everyday practice becomes visible.
- 6
Give two practical costs of ethnographic methods.
Model answer
Ethnography can occupy a researcher for years and produces enormous quantities of notes. Funders are reluctant to support work with no guaranteed output.
