Existing sociological research as secondary data
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Secondary data, literature review and replication study.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Distinguish quantitative from qualitative data.
Why do researchers begin by reading existing sociological research?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by secondary data?
Model answer
Secondary data are material collected by somebody other than the present researcher, for another purpose. Primary data, by contrast, are gathered first-hand for the question in hand.
- 2
Distinguish quantitative from qualitative data.
Model answer
Quantitative data are numerical and can be counted, tabulated and compared. Qualitative data are words or images and describe meaning, context and detail.
- 3
Why do researchers begin by reading existing sociological research?
Model answer
Existing sociological research shows what is already established and where the gaps lie. Duplicating work that has been done is avoided.
- 4
What is a literature review?
Model answer
A literature review is a systematic summary of the published work on a question. Findings, methods and disagreements are set out before new research is designed.
- 5
Give two advantages of re-analysing an existing dataset.
Model answer
Re-analysis costs almost nothing and can use samples far larger than one researcher could gather. Data collected decades ago can be examined with new questions.
- 6
What is a replication study?
Model answer
A replication study repeats an earlier piece of research to see whether its findings still hold. Sharpe repeated her 1976 interviews with London schoolgirls in 1994 and found ambitions had shifted towards careers.
