Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is racism?
Model answer
Racism is the belief that human groups defined by descent or appearance differ in worth or capacity, together with the practices and structures that act on that belief to disadvantage some groups.
- 2
What is meant by racialisation?
Model answer
Racialisation, a concept associated with Robert Miles, is the process by which a group comes to be defined and treated as a race, with social meanings attached to physical or cultural markers that had none before.
- 3
What is the difference between individual and institutional racism?
Model answer
Individual racism is prejudice or discrimination by a person. Institutional racism, as the Macpherson Report defined it in 1999, is a collective failure by an organisation detectable in its processes and culture, which can operate without any individual intending it.
- 4
What is meant by colour-blind racism?
Model answer
Colour-blind racism describes a set of arguments that deny the relevance of race while defending arrangements that produce unequal outcomes, explaining those outcomes by culture, market forces or individual choice instead.
- 5
What is the Marxist explanation of racism?
Model answer
Cox argued in 1948 that racism arose with colonialism and the slave trade as a justification for exploitation. Racism persists, on the Marxist account, because dividing workers along racial lines weakens their collective power.
- 6
What did Castles and Kosack argue?
Model answer
Castles and Kosack argued in 1973 that migrant workers in post-war Europe formed a distinct stratum within the working class. Those workers occupied the least desirable jobs. The division served employers by weakening working-class solidarity.
