Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the international division of labour?
Model answer
The international division of labour is the way production is distributed between countries, with different stages of manufacture, extraction and services carried out in different places according to cost, skills and regulation.
- 2
What is meant by the new international division of labour?
Model answer
The new international division of labour describes the movement of manufacturing from industrialised countries to lower-wage economies from the 1970s, with design, finance and marketing retained in richer countries and assembly relocated.
- 3
What is the informal economy?
Model answer
The informal economy comprises work that is unregistered, untaxed and outside labour regulation. Street trading, casual construction, domestic service and small workshops are typical. The informal economy accounts for a large share of employment in many developing countries.
- 4
What are the consequences of employment being largely informal?
Model answer
Workers have no contract, no protection against dismissal, no sick pay or pension and no route to enforce safety standards, and the state raises little revenue from the activity, which limits what it can provide.
- 5
What is subsistence agriculture, and how does it relate to development?
Model answer
Subsistence agriculture is farming primarily to feed the household rather than to sell. It supports large populations at low income levels, and the movement of labour out of it into other sectors is a defining feature of most accounts of development.
- 6
What is meant by an export processing zone?
Model answer
An export processing zone is an area in which firms producing for export receive tax concessions, relaxed regulation and infrastructure. Governments use them to attract investment; critics argue they concentrate low-paid work with weak protection.
