What is theoretical sampling?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a purposive sample?
Model answer
A purposive sample is chosen deliberately because its members have the characteristics the study needs. The researcher's judgement decides who is included.
- 2
Give one situation where a purposive sample is the right choice.
Model answer
A study of how headteachers respond to inspection needs headteachers who have been inspected. Random selection from the general public would be pointless.
- 3
What is theoretical sampling?
Model answer
Theoretical sampling selects new cases as the analysis develops in order to test an emerging idea. Glaser and Strauss built it into grounded theory in 1967.
- 4
Why is purposive sampling vulnerable to researcher bias?
Model answer
The researcher decides who counts as typical or relevant and can pick cases that support the argument. The method supplies no procedure for checking that choice.
- 5
What is an opportunity sample?
Model answer
An opportunity sample is drawn from whoever is available and willing at the time. Convenience rather than design governs the selection.
- 6
Why is an opportunity sample also called a convenience sample?
Model answer
An opportunity sample is taken because those people were conveniently to hand. Students, colleagues and passers-by are the classic examples.
