Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which official statistics are used to study the health of a population?
Model answer
Mortality rates, morbidity rates and self-reported health from national surveys are the main sources. Hospital records and disease registers supply clinical detail.
- 2
Distinguish mortality from morbidity.
Model answer
Mortality measures death, usually as deaths per thousand people. Morbidity measures the amount of illness and disability among the living.
- 3
Define the infant mortality rate.
Model answer
The infant mortality rate is the number of deaths under one year of age per thousand live births. The rate is widely used to compare the health of populations.
- 4
What does life expectancy at birth measure?
Model answer
Life expectancy at birth is the average number of years a newborn would live under current mortality rates. The measure summarises the mortality of a whole population in one figure.
- 5
Distinguish life expectancy from healthy life expectancy.
Model answer
Life expectancy counts all remaining years of life. Healthy life expectancy counts only those years spent in good health.
- 6
Why do interactionists say health statistics are socially constructed?
Model answer
Interactionists argue that a diagnosis records a clinician's judgement as well as a bodily state. Changing diagnostic categories therefore change the published figures.
