A victim study asks a sample of the population which offences they have experienced. Reported and unreported offences are both captured.
- 2
Name the main victim survey used in England and Wales.
Model answer
The Crime Survey for England and Wales is the main victim survey. The same survey was called the British Crime Survey until 2012.
- 3
Why was the British Crime Survey renamed?
Model answer
After its early sweeps, the British Crime Survey covered only England and Wales, Scotland having had its own survey since 1993, so its title was misleading. The name was changed in 2012 to the Crime Survey for England and Wales.

Trained interviewers question adults in a large random sample of households. The survey has run since 1982 and asks about experiences in the previous year.
- 5
Give two strengths of victim surveys.

Victim surveys reach offences that were never reported to the police. A consistent method over time also makes trends more trustworthy than changing recording practice allows.

Model answer
The survey misses victimless offences, crimes against businesses and homicide. Respondents may also forget incidents, exaggerate them or classify them wrongly.
