- 3 things to know
- Component 3 Section A
Overview
Two classes Marx identified in capitalist society, means of production and exploitation in Marx's account.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What did Marx mean by class in itself and class for itself?
Which of Marx's predictions have not been borne out?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are the two classes Marx identified in capitalist society, and what divides them?
Model answer
Marx defined class by the relationship of a group to the means of production. In capitalist society the bourgeoisie own the means of production and the proletariat own only their labour power, which they must sell in order to live.
- 2
What are the means of production?
Model answer
The means of production are the resources used to produce goods and services — land, factories, machinery, raw materials and capital. Ownership of them is what, in Marx's account, determines class position.
- 3
What is meant by exploitation in Marx's account?
Model answer
Exploitation is the extraction of surplus value: workers produce more value than they receive in wages, and the difference is appropriated by the owner as profit. Marx treated this as the structural basis of class conflict rather than as unfair dealing by individuals.
- 4
What is surplus value?
Model answer
Surplus value is the difference between the value a worker's labour creates and the wage paid for it. Marx argued that it is the source of profit and therefore of the accumulation of capital.
- 5
What is meant by alienation?
Model answer
Alienation is the separation of workers from the product of their labour, from the act of production, from other workers and from their own human capacities. Marx argued that wage labour under capitalism produces all four.
- 6
What did Marx mean by class in itself and class for itself?
Model answer
A class in itself is a group sharing an objective position but not aware of it. A class for itself has developed consciousness of its shared interests and organises to act on them. Marx expected the proletariat to make that transition.
