Social Inequality: Evidence and Patterns
Ethnic inequality in employment and income
- 3 things to know
- Component 3 Section A
Overview
Ethnic penalty, occupational concentration by ethnicity and institutional racism.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is it misleading to speak of minority ethnic groups as a single category?
What patterns exist in unemployment by ethnicity?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by ethnicity?
Model answer
Ethnicity is a shared sense of identity based on culture, language, religion, history or ancestry. Ethnicity differs from race in being understood as socially constructed and self-defined rather than as a fixed biological category.
- 2
Why do sociologists treat race as a social construct?
Model answer
Because the genetic variation within any so-called racial group is greater than that between groups, so the categories do not correspond to biological divisions. What is real and consequential is the social meaning attached to them.
- 3
What is the ethnic penalty?
Model answer
The ethnic penalty, a term used by Heath and Cheung, is the disadvantage in the labour market that remains for minority ethnic groups after qualifications, age, region and other measurable factors have been taken into account.
- 4
Why is the phrase ethnic penalty preferred to discrimination in research?
Model answer
Because a statistical residual shows that something unexplained is operating, but does not on its own prove that discrimination caused it. The term names the gap without claiming more than the data supports.
- 5
What evidence is there of discrimination in recruitment?
Model answer
Field experiments send matched applications differing only in the name of the applicant. Applicants with names associated with minority ethnic groups repeatedly receive fewer invitations to interview. Such studies have been conducted in Britain over several decades with consistent results.
- 6
Why is it misleading to speak of minority ethnic groups as a single category?
Model answer
Outcomes differ sharply between groups and within them. Some groups have above-average rates of entry to higher education and to professional work while others do not, so an aggregate figure conceals more than it reveals.
