- 1
What change did Sharpe find when she repeated her study of girls' priorities?
Model answer
Sharpe interviewed working-class girls in London for Just Like a Girl in 1976 and found love, marriage and children came first. Repeating the work in 1994, Sharpe found careers and independence had moved to the top.
- 2
How has the women's movement been linked to girls' achievement?
Model answer
Feminists argue that the women's movement raised expectations of what girls could do. Rising female employment then made staying in education an investment with a visible return.
- 3
Give two equal-opportunity measures credited with improving girls' attainment.
Model answer
Girls Into Science and Technology challenged gendered subject choice in British schools from the 1980s. The National Curriculum of 1988 also forced boys and girls to study the same core subjects to sixteen.
- 4
How are female role models said to affect girls' ambitions?
Model answer
Feminists point to the rise of women in professional and managerial jobs since the 1970s. Girls now see attainable examples of careers built on qualifications.
- 5
What did Mitsos and Browne argue about boys' underachievement?
Model answer
Mitsos and Browne argued in 1998 that boys are more easily distracted, poorer at sustained coursework and over-confident about their ability. Girls were found to be better organised and more likely to meet deadlines.
- 6
Explain the crisis of masculinity argument.
Model answer
The collapse of mining, shipbuilding and heavy manufacturing removed the manual jobs that once defined working-class male identity. Sociologists argue that some boys respond by disengaging from an education that no longer promises a recognisable adult role.
