Unstructured and semi-structured interviews
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Unstructured interview and semi-structured interview.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a semi-structured interview?
Why do interpretivists prefer unstructured interviews?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an unstructured interview?
Model answer
An unstructured interview is a guided conversation with no fixed wording or order. The researcher holds topics in mind and follows wherever the respondent leads.
- 2
What is a semi-structured interview?
Model answer
A semi-structured interview works from a common list of topics but varies the wording, order and follow-up questions. Comparison and depth are both partly achieved.
- 3
Why do interpretivists prefer unstructured interviews?
Model answer
Interpretivists prefer unstructured interviews because respondents describe their world in their own words. Interpretivists argue that meaning can be reached no other way.
- 4
What is probing in an unstructured interview?
Model answer
Probing means following an answer with a further question such as "why do you say that?". Detail and reasoning are drawn out that a fixed schedule would miss.
- 5
Give two reasons unstructured interviews score badly on reliability.
Model answer
Two unstructured interviews never use the same questions, so another researcher cannot repeat them. The interviewer's own judgement decides what is asked next.
- 6
Why are unstructured interviews expensive?
Model answer
Unstructured interviews run for an hour or more each and produce transcripts that must be typed and analysed by hand. Skilled interviewers are needed rather than clerical staff.
