Realism and the search for underlying causes
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Realism in the philosophy of social research, open system and closed system.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Who developed critical realism?
How does realism differ from positivism?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is realism in the philosophy of social research?
Model answer
Realism holds that underlying structures and mechanisms exist and cause events, even where they cannot be observed. Explanation means identifying those mechanisms.
- 2
Who developed critical realism?
Model answer
Bhaskar developed critical realism, setting out its account of science in 1975. Sayer later applied it directly to social research.
- 3
How does realism differ from positivism?
Model answer
Positivism confines explanation to observable regularities between variables. Realism argues that the real causes are unobservable mechanisms producing those regularities.
- 4
How does realism differ from interpretivism?
Model answer
Interpretivism explains action through the meanings actors hold. Realism accepts that meanings matter but insists structures beyond the actor's awareness also cause outcomes.
- 5
What is an open system?
Model answer
An open system is one in which many mechanisms operate at once and cannot be isolated. Society is an open system, so constant conjunctions are rare.
- 6
What is a closed system?
Model answer
A closed system is one in which everything but the mechanism of interest is held constant. Laboratory experiments approximate it and social life does not.
