What did Smith and Noble identify as the hidden costs of free schooling?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define material deprivation.
Model answer
Material deprivation is a lack of the physical and financial resources needed for full participation. In education it covers income, housing, diet, equipment and access to space to study.
- 2
How does poor housing affect a child's schooling?
Model answer
Overcrowded or temporary housing leaves a child nowhere quiet to work and disturbed sleep. Damp and cold housing also raise rates of illness, which cuts attendance.

Model answer
Smith and Noble argued in 1995 that state schooling in Britain is not really free. Uniform, transport, equipment, trips and computers all fall on the family.

Model answer
Ridge studied children in low-income households in Britain and published in 2002. Many took part-time jobs to fund essentials, which cut the time and energy available for schoolwork.
- 6
Describe the study Halsey, Heath and Ridge published in 1980.
Model answer
Halsey, Heath and Ridge surveyed 8,529 men in England and Wales for Origins and Destinations. A boy from the service class was found to be many times more likely to remain in education past sixteen than a working-class boy of the same ability.
