- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Data do interpretivists prefer, micro approach and top-down criticism interpretivists make of positivism.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why do interpretivists reject the natural science model?
What does verstehen mean?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is interpretivism?
Model answer
Interpretivism is the position that sociology must uncover the meanings people give to their actions. Human behaviour is held to differ in kind from the behaviour of objects.
- 2
Why do interpretivists reject the natural science model?
Model answer
Interpretivists argue that people interpret situations and act on those interpretations. The objects studied by physics do nothing of the sort.
- 3
What does verstehen mean?
Model answer
Verstehen is empathetic understanding of an action from the actor's own point of view. Weber made it central to sociological explanation.
- 4
What did Weber mean by adequacy at the level of meaning?
Model answer
Weber argued that an explanation must make the action intelligible as something a person could reasonably do. Statistical regularity alone is not an explanation.
- 5
Which methods do interpretivists favour?
Model answer
Interpretivists favour unstructured interviews, participant observation, ethnography and personal documents. Each allows meanings to emerge in the participant's own terms.
- 6
What kind of data do interpretivists prefer?
Model answer
Interpretivists prefer qualitative data such as transcripts, field notes and documents. Detail and context are preserved rather than reduced to a figure.
