Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define the mass media.

    Model answer

The mass media are the channels through which a message is communicated to a large, dispersed audience at once. Newspapers, television, radio, film and online platforms are the main examples.

  2. 2

Distinguish traditional media from new media.

    Model answer

Traditional media deliver a fixed product from one producer to many receivers, as a printed newspaper does. New media are digital, interactive and networked, so audiences can also produce and redistribute content.

  3. 3

What is meant by media convergence?

    Model answer

Convergence is the merging of formerly separate media into a single device or platform. A smartphone now delivers television, radio, print, telephony and photography at once.

  4. 4

What four functions of the media did Wright identify?

    Model answer

Wright argued in the United States in 1960 that the media perform surveillance, correlation, transmission of culture and entertainment. Surveillance means supplying information about the environment, and correlation means interpreting it.

  5. 5

How do functionalists link the media to value consensus?

    Model answer

Functionalists argue that the media circulate shared values by rewarding the admired and shaming the deviant. Coverage of national events such as a coronation or a disaster is said to reaffirm collective identity.

  6. 6

What did Durkheim's account of crime reporting contribute to functionalist media theory?

    Model answer

Durkheim argued that public condemnation of wrongdoing reinforces the moral boundaries of a society. Functionalists apply the idea to media coverage of trials and scandals, which restates the rules for everyone watching.
