Operationalisation and the choice of research topic

  • 3 things to know
  • Component 2

Overview

Turning a concept into something countable, the judgements hidden in that step, and what actually decides a topic: funding, access, the researcher's values and what has been asked before.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is operationalisation?

    Model answer

Operationalisation is turning an abstract concept into something that can actually be measured. Indicators are defined so that data can be collected on them.

  2. 2

Give an example of operationalising social class.

    Model answer

Social class can be operationalised through occupation, using an official classification of jobs. Income, housing tenure and education are alternative indicators.

  3. 3

Why is operationalisation harder for some concepts than others?

    Model answer

Concepts such as age and income already have obvious and agreed measures. Concepts such as alienation, religiosity or happiness have no settled indicator.

  4. 4

    What is an indicator?

    Model answer

An indicator is an observable measure standing in for a concept that cannot be observed directly. Church attendance is a common indicator of religiosity.

  5. 5

Why can an indicator misrepresent the concept behind it?

    Model answer

An indicator captures only part of what a concept means. A count of church attendance misses believers who never attend.

  6. 6

Why does a poor operationalisation threaten a study's validity?

    Model answer

A badly chosen indicator measures something other than the concept intended. The findings then describe the indicator rather than the idea.
