Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define a pressure group.

    Model answer

A pressure group is an organisation seeking to influence policy without contesting elections for government. Influence rather than office is the objective.

  2. 2

Distinguish a sectional from a promotional pressure group.

    Model answer

A sectional group defends the interests of its own members, as a trade union or trade association does. A promotional group campaigns for a cause open to anyone who agrees with it.

  3. 3

Distinguish insider from outsider pressure groups.

    Model answer

Grant (1989, UK) defined insider groups as those consulted routinely by government. Outsider groups lack that access and rely on publicity and protest.

  4. 4

Give an example of an insider group and of an outsider group.

    Model answer

Professional and industry bodies consulted on regulation are typical insider groups. Campaigns that use occupations and stunts to attract coverage are typical outsider groups.

  5. 5

Why might a group prefer to remain an outsider?

    Model answer

Insider status can require confidentiality and moderated demands. Some groups judge that independence and publicity achieve more.

  6. 6

Give three methods pressure groups use.

    Model answer

Pressure groups lobby ministers and officials, brief the media and organise petitions and demonstrations. Legal challenge and the supply of expert evidence are also used.
