Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is confidentiality in research?
Model answer
Confidentiality is the undertaking that information a participant gives will not be passed on in identifiable form. Access to the raw data is restricted.
- 2
What is anonymity?
Model answer
Anonymity means the participant's identity is never recorded, or is removed from the data. Nobody can then link an answer to a name.
- 3
Distinguish confidentiality from anonymity.
Model answer
A confidential study knows who said what but undertakes not to reveal it. An anonymous study cannot reveal it because the link was never kept.
- 4
How are participants and places usually anonymised?
Model answer
Participants and places are given pseudonyms and identifying details are altered or removed. Willis (1977) called his school Hammertown for this reason.
- 5
Why can anonymisation fail in a small community?
Model answer
A small community allows readers to identify people from their role and circumstances. Removing a name is not enough where only one person holds that job.
- 6
What is privacy in the ethical sense?
Model answer
Privacy is a person's right to decide what about their life is made available to others. Research intrudes on privacy even where nothing is published.
