  1. 1

What distinction did Troeltsch draw between a church and a sect?

    Model answer

Troeltsch argued in 1912 that a church is large, formally organised and accepts the wider society. A sect is small, exclusive and rejects the society around it.

  2. 2

List three characteristics of a church.

    Model answer

A church has a large membership, a professional and hierarchical clergy, and a claim to universal truth. Churches are also usually closely connected to the state and to the wealthy.

  3. 3

List three characteristics of a sect.

    Model answer

A sect is small, demands total commitment and requires members to renounce the wider world. Leadership is typically charismatic rather than professionally trained.

  4. 4

What is a denomination, and who introduced the term?

    Model answer

Niebuhr set out the concept in 1929 in The Social Sources of Denominationalism. A denomination is midway between church and sect, accepting other faiths and making moderate demands on members.

  5. 5

What did Niebuhr argue happens to sects over time?

    Model answer

Niebuhr argued that sects cannot survive beyond the first generation in their original form. Children born into the sect lack the founders' fervour, so the group becomes a denomination or dies.

  6. 6

How did Becker define a cult?

    Model answer

Becker set out the category in 1932. A cult is loosely organised, tolerant of other beliefs and makes few demands, with individual experience at its centre.
