Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is neo-Marxism?

    Model answer

Neo-Marxism is the body of later work that retains Marx's focus on capitalism and class while revising his account to address the survival of capitalism, the growth of the middle classes, and the role of culture, ideas and the state.

  2. 2

What did Gramsci mean by hegemony?

    Model answer

Hegemony is leadership exercised through consent rather than force. The dominant class secures acceptance of its worldview, so its rule appears legitimate and natural. Gramsci argued that such cultural leadership explains why capitalism survives without constant coercion.

  3. 3

What is meant by dual consciousness in Gramsci's account?

    Model answer

Gramsci argued that subordinate groups hold two sets of ideas at once — those absorbed from the dominant culture, and those arising from their own experience of exploitation. Change becomes possible when the second set is organised into a coherent alternative.

  4. 4

What did Althusser argue about the state?

    Model answer

Althusser distinguished repressive state apparatuses, such as the police, army and courts, which work by force, from ideological state apparatuses such as education, religion, the family and the media, which work by shaping consciousness.

  5. 5

How did Althusser's account differ from Gramsci's?

    Model answer

Althusser gave far less scope to human agency, treating individuals as largely constituted by ideological structures, while Gramsci emphasised struggle over ideas and the possibility of a counter-hegemony developed by subordinate groups.

  6. 6

What did Erik Olin Wright argue about the middle classes?

    Model answer

Wright argued in 1985 that some positions occupy contradictory class locations: managers, for example, exercise control over workers on behalf of capital while remaining employees themselves, so they cannot be placed in either of Marx's two classes.
